Pierre-Yves Donzé was born in Switzerland and studied history at the University of Neuchâtel, where he obtained his PhD in 2005. After stints as a visiting researcher in Japan and in the United States, he is now a guest research associate at Kyoto University and teaches at Kansai University. He has published extensively on the watch industry and was awarded the prestigious Gaïa Prize in 2011.

Das Buch, das die drei Autoren zusammen geschaffen haben, ist chronologisch aufgebaut. Es beginnt mit Bain und seinen Wanduhren aus der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, um sich dann Elgin und Lip zu widmen.

Lucien Trueb hat sich aufgemacht, rund um den Globus alle noch lebenden Konstrukteure der Quarzära aufzusuchen. Er ließ sich die „Null-Nummern“, die ersten Kaliber und Prototypen, zeigen und die Geschichten um deren Konstruktionen erzählen, schrieb alles nieder und organisierte das Fotografieren der Fundstücke. So haben wir hier ein Kompendium von über 300 Seiten mit einem tollen Register und verschiedensten Verzeichnissen, einem umfangreichen Inhaltsverzeichnis und rund 500 Abbildungen, die sicher nicht die schönsten Uhren zeigen, aber als Überblick über eine Produktepoche eine unschlagbare Dokumentation sind.

In der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts war Heinrich Johann Kessels einer der bedeutendsten Präzisions-uhrmacher ausserhalb Englands. Er arbeitete bei Abraham Louis Breguet in Paris und liess sich anschliessend in Altona nieder. Unter den Astronomen seiner Zeit war Kessels wohlbekannt, und er belieferte zahlreichen Observatorien in Europa und Amerika mit seinen Pendeluhren und Chronometern.
Neben zerstreuten biographischen Angaben und etlichen Briefen haben sich auch einige Erzeugnisse seiner Werkstatt bis zum heutigen Tage erhalten, die zu den grossen Raritäten der Uhrmacherkunst zählen.
Für die vorliegende Biographie wurden zahlreiche, bislang unbekannte Originalquellen herangezogen, und erstmals ist die Erstellung eines Werkverzeichnisses unternommen worden.

John Goldberger depicts and illustrates the chapters with the round and rectangular wristwatches from the 30's. Some water-proof wristwatches from the 40's are well described and the next pages enter in the time of the famous chronographs.
A special chapter is dedicated to the Amagnetic wristwatches.
By the end of the book, the Nautilus Models and the modern steel watches have their place too.
The final chapter relate the history of the beginning of the Stern brothers company and end with small photos of watch parts and photos and index of references.
