KURZ O.

Had somebody in the Middle Ages announced a book with this title, the public would have missunderstood him completey. They would have assumed that European clocks and watches in the Near East was a proverb, or proverbial saying, of the Owls to Athens or Coals to newcastle type, the description of the futile action of carrying something to its original home or to the place where it already exists in abundance. For many centuries, Europeans regarded the Islamic East as the land where horological knowledge was at home, the source one had to approach if one wanted to study the science of exact time-measuring.
